Overview and Common Failures
Body Paint The car's body paint is weak, but the chips do not yellow as quickly as before. Corrosion does not develop immediately, so overall the resistance to rust of VAZ has increased.
Interior The interior of the Cross is bright, but due to budget materials, it quickly starts to squeak. The sound insulation is weak, the seats are uncomfortable, and the door windows do not lower all the way.
Electrics The electrical system has become more reliable, and if something breaks, repair and replacement are inexpensive.
Engine The 8-valve VAZ 11186 requires valve clearance adjustment, but it is decent in terms of reliability. Occasionally, sensors fail, the thermostat sticks, and oil leaks from under the valve cover. The worst-case scenario is the water pump seizing, which leads to the timing belt breaking and valve damage.
The 16-valve VAZ 21127 is equipped with hydraulic lifters and does not require adjustment. It is equally reliable, with the same problems, including the risk of valve damage.
Transmission The mechanical gearbox VAZ 2181 with cable control is known for its howling noise, periodic lubricant leaks, and not-so-high synchronizer lifespan. However, it performs well and is more enjoyable to use compared to the older manual transmissions from AvtoVAZ.
On the other hand, the robotic transmission VAZ 2182 has received very contradictory reviews: some owners praise it, while others criticize it. Read about it in a separate and detailed article.
Suspension The Kalina's suspension, already reliable, was reinforced in the Cross version and did not worsen. Usually, the stabilizer struts and rear wheel bearings are replaced by 100,000 km.
The brakes have no issues, but the universal joint of the steering shaft wears out quickly.
