Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the M4R engine according to the catalog is 118 kg. The M4R engine number is located at the junction of the block with the gearbox. Probably the most well-known problem of this power unit is oil consumption. Sometimes, changing to a different oil or decarbonization helps, but most often only an overhaul is needed. The timing chain has a low lifespan and often needs replacement at approximately 200,000 km. It is not expensive to replace, but usually mechanics also recommend replacing the expensive phase regulator. On the forum, there are many cases described of a sudden drop in engine power in hot weather. The most common cause is the air temperature sensor, which is combined with the throttle valve. The aluminum cylinder head of this power unit is very delicate and is not only afraid of overheating, but also excessive force when tightening spark plugs. Be extremely careful. Other minor issues include occasional fluctuation of engine speed at idle due to throttle contamination, often a squealing belt of auxiliary units, or a knocking valve that requires adjustment.
