Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the D4F engine according to the catalog is 88 kg. The engine number D4F is located at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. Noisy operation. Many owners complain about the noisy operation of the engine, especially at high speeds. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about it. It is the price to pay for the small working volume of the engine. If the engine becomes excessively loud, you can try adjusting the valves, but this will require removing the intake manifold and valve cover, and replacing their gaskets.
Timing belt failure. This engine is simple in design and quite reliable, but it does have a weak point. According to European regulations, the timing belt should be replaced every 120,000 km, but it can snap earlier and bend the valves. It is recommended to replace it every 60,000 km.
Ignition coil. This engine is equipped with an ignition coil combined with high-voltage wires, and in case of their breakdown or fracture, the entire expensive unit needs to be replaced. However, this problem has become irrelevant as a new coil with separate wires has been introduced.
Oil leaks. There are quite a few complaints on forums about oil leaks from under the valve cover, and the usual cause is overtightening of its bolts. So, when installing, lubricate them with sealant.
Other malfunctions. After 250,000 km, oil consumption often occurs due to wear of piston rings and valve bushings. The fuel pump and accessory equipment also do not have the highest resource in this engine.
